The Neighbourhood
East London is in a world of its own. All comers are welcomed to its patchwork of scenes, but where do you start? These are the essential bars, shops, clubs, restaurants, galleries and hangouts in the East End. Whether you're an arty type, an indie hipster or fashionista, here are the places to head to.
For most visitors the key draws are its big weekend markets, glitzy shopping malls, the cottage is walking distance to the Vast new Olympic Park and free, family-friendly museums. A Tudor house in Hackney, modern art in Whitechapel, a towering school for the poor in Mile End, a riverside stroll in Wapping – there's plenty to enjoy here.
Getting Around
Thanks to fast modern transport links – notably the Docklands Light Railway and the superb London Undergound and Overground railway network, it's now even easier to zip off to find many more treasures.
Further threading through inner East London from Kingsland Road to Limehouse Basin, the Regent's Canal offers a handy path for walkers and cyclists that links up key points of interest including the Geffrye Museum, Broadway Market, Victoria Park and Mile End. Cycle hire is available at the end of the road.
