This charming Grade II-listed 16th century cottage is positioned on Bell Street in Henley-on-Thames. The facade was reworked in the Georgian era, while the interiors have been the subject of a sensitive modernisation in recent years.

At first glance, the house is typically Georgian in style; it presents a double-fronted redbrick facade to street, complete with first-floor bay window, discrete brickwork ornamentation and a pan-tiled roof. The interiors reflect the aesthetic of a completely different time, one which has been married throughout with contemporary additions, to create a family home firmly of the twenty-first century.

Access is gained on Bell Street, one of Henley’s most charming streets, characterised by its gorgeous sweeping Georgian terraces. Inside, an entrance hall lined with quarry tiles leads on one side to a snug with wide pine boards underfoot, and on the other to a more spacious living room with hand-painted Douglas Watson tiles. Further along the hall, there is a dining room with a work-burning stove, opposite a boot room and guest WC. The rear sections of the plan on this floor are occupied by a utility room with stone slab floors and arguably, the heart of the home, a large open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining room. These spaces have high ceilings with exposed beams and Italian terracotta roof tiles underfoot. The kitchen is formed of reclaimed units with zinc tops and a cast-concrete butler sink.

From the lounge area, Crittall doors open out onto a pergola and outdoor dining area. A gravel path leads from this part of the garden, to the bottom where there is a seating area perfect for catching the late afternoon sun, surrounded by grape vines, wisteria and a hibiscus tree.

The first floor of the house opens up dramatically as contemporary exploration in volume take shape. The en-suite master bedroom is positioned at the front of the plan and exploits the bay window to establish a bright and spacious set of rooms. The bathroom has a Hurlingham copper bath and shower head, as well as twin porcelain sinks. A glazed door leads out, directly onto a large private balcony overlooking the garden and dining area below. A glass balustrade allows light from the balcony to flow back into the house. There are two further bedrooms on this floor, one is accessed from a staircase in the lounge and has a juliet balcony positioned in the gable end of the house, overlooking the garden. It has an en-suite shower room and acts perfectly as private quarters for guests.

The second floor is occupied by a large bedroom at the top of the house. It has significant amounts of built-in storage space and a fold-out desk, as well as an en-suite bathroom. There is also additional eaves storage space on this floor.

Henley is a town of charming medieval streets peppered with Victorian and Edwardian architecture lining one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames. It has an excellent range of boutiques and art galleries, a three-screen cinema, theatre and several very good restaurants and pubs. The town comes alive in the summer months for The Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Festival of Music & Arts. Nearby Marlow provides a further range of attractive facilities.

There are several good gastro pubs all within 20 minutes including The Hand & Flowers and The Coach in Marlow (both Tom Kerridge), The Five Horseshoes in Maidensgrove, The Dew Drop Inn and Hurley Hotel in Hurley, and The Dog & Badger in Medmenham. Orwell’s pub and restaurant on Shiplake Row is a firm local favourite.

Henley Station is around ten minutes walk from the house and offers direct services to London Paddington in approximately 45 minutes. The M4 is easily reached for access to Heathrow (around 30 mins by car), London (just over an hour), and the West Country. There are several highly-rated schools within close proximity, both state and private and for all ages.

Available to move in from 03 January 2021, this property benefits from available parking, a warm fireplace, and garden access. Property is offered unfurnished.
